Thick tires on muscle cars make my heart rate go up.

I like the skinny tires on really really old cars :)

I want some nice wheels with tires like that on the 4Runner. Fat sidewall. none of that stretched garbage.

There was an episode on Top Gear where they took a RWD car and put relatively narrow tires on it and had a drift fest.

Yeah and they are like balloons, terrible for curves, maybe muscle cars don’t care about turning. On my 71' Z, going from my 14x7 wheels with balloons to my 15x8 with lower profile changed everything.

But was it the 15 or the 8 that made the difference? I’d argue it was probably the 8.

No the height of the side wall and all that play. No matter how stiff the suspension that tall sidewall was a marshmallow. Like F1 cars suspension is mostly sidewall. Here is a long time ago and then now. It’s only about an inch but it rolled a lot more.

I hear you. I’d have kept the stock wheel size. Yes, you get more roll and more mush, but that’s how they designed it. There’s an aesthetic to those rollier cars from the 60s and 70s. They still tour a windy road very nicely.
I’ve always thought the 70-series aspect ratio was the best.

The coast highway in CA is pretty demanding, I have stiffened everything up. Strut braces too. I got good lowering springs and shocks now so it all helps. There is plenty of old handling left let me tell you, pretty physical.

Those earlier Zs were great cars. I’d take a clean 260 or 280Z over just about anything, given the option. But I’d want it bone stock.

Well you want the 24oZ, they get heavier by the 60/80 plus heavier and not much better engines. Triple carbs and a 5 speed from a 260Z (240z was a 4 speed in 1969). Save 300 lbs and rev it up! Mine isn’t stock but it is within what the racing versions were doing. I did upgrade to disk brakes in the rear, much safer, they only had them up front stock.

As someone who runs both low and high profile tires I can tell you that deflection is no bueno for handling. Usually it upsets the car by swaying back and forth a little leading to grip changes midcorner.

Thank you. I’d seen exactly this, but wouldn’t have known what to look for. I thought that car sounded absolutely wonderful. I bet you could turn off the management systems and have a delightfully squirrely ride with the “255-section” tires that came stock.
You’re a good Oppo pal. Cheers!

I agree, smaller sidewall is better for curves, but at some pint you lose the cushion needed to make that drive fun. I definatley would not go bigger than 17 or 18 on my GTo, but my AH Sprite I made 15x6.5 instead of 13x5
